先日より、世界的家具コレクター、故・永井敬二氏のコレクションを継承するための、クラウドファンディングと展覧会がスタートした。主宰する代表の山田敦貴さんからは以前よりプロジェクトの話は断片的には伺っていたが、いよいよ大きな一歩を踏み出した形だ。
わたしたちは、永井さんとの面識はない。昔一度ガレージセールにお邪魔したことがあり、チェアを一脚わが家で愛用しているというくらい。「いつか自分たちのデザインを見てもらう機会があるといいね」なんて二人で話していたが、残念ながらそれは叶わなかった。永井さんの薫陶を受けた山田さんとは、たしか10年ほど前、ひょんなことで繋がり連絡を取り合う仲だった。当時はこれほど大きな使命を背負われるとは、失礼ながら想像していなかった。「人生をかけてこのプロジェクトに臨む覚悟」という彼を見て、やり遂げられるのは彼らしかいないだろうと確信すると同時に、そういう人たちの手に委ねられたことがまた必然だなと思う。

気づけば長きに渡って「情報」というものが世界の主役として取り沙汰されてきたように思う。デザインとしても経済としても。でもここから先、時代の文法は書き替わってゆく。オープンな情報が限界費用ゼロへ向けて下に振れるにつれ、AIが喰らうことのできない時間を内包した「物質」の価値がシーソーのように上がり、普遍として固定される。「物好き」の時代到来である。永井さんの膨大かつ貴重なコレクションは、情報という濁流の中で価値の座標を定める「錨」となってゆくはずだ。

Recently, a crowdfunding campaign and exhibition have launched to pass down and utilize the collection of the late Keiji Nagai, a world-renowned furniture collector. I had been hearing fragments about this project for a while from Mr. Atsuki Yamada, the representative leading the initiative, and it seems they have finally taken a major step forward.

We never had the chance to meet Mr. Nagai in person. We simply visited his garage sale once a long time ago, and we still lovingly use a chair we bought there at our home. We used to say to each other, “It would be nice if he could see our designs someday,” but sadly, that never came to pass. As for Mr. Yamada, who was heavily influenced by Mr. Nagai, we connected unexpectedly about ten years ago and have kept in touch ever since. To be entirely honest, I couldn’t have imagined back then that he would take on such a massive mission. Seeing his resolve to “dedicate his life to this project,” I am convinced that they are the only ones who can see it through. At the same time, it feels almost inevitable that the collection has been entrusted to their hands.

For a long time now, it feels like “information” has been the leading actor in our world, both in design and in economics. But from here on out, the rules of our era are going to be rewritten. As open information trends downward toward zero marginal cost, the value of primary “matter”—the physical things that AI cannot consume—will rise like a seesaw, solidifying into a universal absolute. The era of the “Monozuki” (true lovers of objects) has arrived. Mr. Nagai’s vast and precious collection will undoubtedly serve as an anchor, fixing the coordinates of value amidst the muddy torrent of information.
